WHAT IS IDENTITY?

From the being of the self to the canvas of the artist, identity constitutes the very foundation of art production. It is because of this that Curator HongLee have chosen the theme “Identity” for their upcoming art fair next Spring.

What is identity? We will answer this question through a series of articles preceding the beginning of “Focus Art Fair: Identity” which will take place from June 25th to June 28th 2021. Every article will be the occasion to explore this subject through different themes.

We define the term identity as the fundamental nature of a person who creates his/her identity. This is the element which shapes the existence of a being. Art appears to be a vehicle to express this definition, a vector to share the identity. Focus Art Fair encourages the artists to unveil their identity through their artworks.

In every human civilisations artists have found a way to exist through their art, sometimes even creating an alter ego. An identity totally shaped by their idea of themselves or the idealisation of their self. The materialisation of self is not limited to a self-portrait. Whether they create a painting, a sculpture, a photography, beyond the very obvious self-portraits, artists shape their image and their role in society. Once their creations meet the public eye this new perception defines their identity that, in some cases, was a turning point in art history.

You can not think of Cubism, Fauvism or Dadaism without naming their pioneers. In the same way, you will not find a work of art that does not tell a story about his/her creator. Their identity is at the core of their work, it becomes the work. In this occasion, for FOCUS Paris Identity, HongLee Curator will present a variety of art pieces from artists from all over the world. The Russian artist, Ellen Sheidlin who causes sensation on Instagram, puts on a performance in each of her creations bending her identity through surrealism. The South Korean illustrator Lee K. becomes a master in the art of the realisation of the portrait. The artist invents new selves on each of his portraits. Besides them, about one hundred artists will participate in the exhibition developing themselves on the topic of "identity".

Atelier Richelieu was founded on the foundations of a private mansion and the former printing house of the famous magazine “L'Illustration”. It is a 700m2 workshop on two levels, dedicated to events, in the heart of the Bourse / Opéra garnier neighborhood. Its glass roofs and high ceilings give it an atypical and spacious look. Atelier Richelieu is a space as rare as it is exceptional, it will bring real added value to your professional events.
