The “Fragmented” series by Rob Strati on display at FOCUS was inspired by an accident, when a plate from his wife’s late mother broke and was placed on his family's kitchen island for several months. Unsure what to do with something which had sentimental value, but was beyond repair, it stayed on the island, moving around to make way for everyday objects, like the mail, and domestic tasks, like cutting vegetables.
With time, Strati started to think about the kinds of stories contained in such an object, which could be told through the plate’s surviving fragment. It made its way into his studio and onto a blank sheet of paper. One day Strati picked up a pen and started working on Fragmented, exploring the possibilities of broken things and the stories that can evolve from them.
