ONE EAST ASIA SEES PH ART RISE

Singapore-based One East Asia returns to FOCUS Art Fair New York this month with works by Filipino artists Abi Dionisio, Demi Padua, Isko Andrade, and Shannah Orencio. The fair ran May 21 to 24 at Chelsea Industrial in Manhattan, marking the gallery’s second participation in the New York edition.
For One East Asia director Veronica Howe, the group reflects a shift in younger Philippine contemporary art practices, from imagery long associated with political and social commentary toward works grounded in material, process, and personal experience.
“If you look at the history of Filipino art, much of it has been defined by paintings depicting social struggles and political history,” Howe says. “The works of Abi, Demi, Isko, and Shannah move in a different direction. They lean more into personal experience, material, and process.”
